Joel and Denise – a love story

Once upon a time…This is not an obvious love story. This one begins in Copacabana beach!

I was working in Mesquita city , just another normal work day. But that day I  was feeling tired and stressed. As the sea always makes me feel better, I’ve decided to go to the beach for a little relief. I took a train and a subway to get to Copacabana. It was 2014 , December 17th.

Whenever I go to the beach by myself , I choose to sit down either beside  a  girl or a couple, ’cause I feel  I can ask for help to these people in the case of a need. It is a way to avoid that some guy thinks I want a date.

I’ve found a girl sitting down on the sand and I’ve stayed near her. We started a conversation and she said that she was waiting for a friend and that he was already late. Suddenly she answered to somebody  calling and asked me to watch her things  so  she could call him to where we  were.

She came back with two guys. I’ve noticed that they were not Brazilian and just one of them could speak Portuguese. This one sat down beside her. The other one just stayed there, standing up. I thought that maybe I should offer him a spot to sit on my towel. I remember asking to myself if he had sunscreen because it was such hot day he was so white… Then, before I could say anything, his friend asked me if he could sit down beside me. I said “yes” and then I’ve offered him the sunscreen.

His name was  Joel and he didn’t speak any Portuguese. We’ve started a conversation and  talked about travels and life in general. He’s invited me to go out for a dinner. I’ve thought: “maybe this guy  thinks I’m  a prostitute.”  Some foreigner guys  just think that lots of Brazilian girls are prostitutes. That’s why I couldn’t accept his invitation that time. Then I’ve decided to take a bus to go home. We said our good byes, but before I took the bus he gave me his e-mail address and Facebook.

I went home  but I had really enjoyed our talking. Therefore, I’ve  sent him a message saying how nice it was to have met him. So, he invited me out again, this time for lunch. I’ve thought: “Why not?”. But before going to Copacabana again I’ve sent all the information I had about him to a friend (sure, I wanted to be safe!). I’ve met him in front of his friend’s  apartment and we decided to have  lunch in a restaurant called Meia Pataca. It was a good talking again. He has told me about his job in a fishing boat in Alaska. I’ve told him about my work in special education and  how it was the life with my dog. And again we’ve talked about travels.

After  lunch, I’ve suggested to go to Forte de Copacabana, because it is one of my favorite places in Rio. We went to the top of a stone where we could see the sea. Then I’ve said: “I like it here”; and he’s replied: “I like you”. I could just smile… It seemed  to me  such a sincere affirmation. We  had sit there  and  just watched the sea, the birds and a fisherman. We’ve made jokes about so many stuff… In that wonderful place our first kiss has  took place.

After this we came back walking alongside the beach. By this time my friend called me to know if  everything was fine. I’ve said:”I am OK, I think he is not a psycho!”.

Then I’ve told him that  if he wanted to come back someday I would show him many other  good things in Rio. He’s replied that when could be back, he would love to go skydiving with me  if I was OK with that. He would leave Brazil in the next day and would go to Ecuadorian Amazon rain forest. For this reason, he couldn’t talk to me for a while. “Well”, I thought, ” this is the perfect way to do not talk to a girl anymore”.

For a while, I thought I was right and that he wouldn’t talk to me anymore.  It has surprised me when I’ve received his message in January 1st (2015). After this message, we’ve started talking every single day! One day he said: “I like you”. Then: ” Will you wait for me?”  and I said yes!  He was working in Alaska during some months but even though,  we were always keeping in contact. During this time we’ve used to communicated by e-mail everyday.

So finally, in April (2015),  he was back. He was back and now our story was possible. He’s kept his promise and we went to skydiving in Resende, a city close to Rio. I felt  so grateful, because he could make me think about doing  such a thing like skydiving. Our desire for adventure has united us!
