Ecological Tour of Sugarloaf in Rio de janeiro
Sugarloaf hill (Pão de Açúcar) in Rio de Janeiro is known to the world for its beauty. Besides the cable car ride that takes visitors to Urca hill and Sugarloaf hill, it is possible to take a Ecological Tour. I took this tour in July 2019. It was a beautiful day full of sunshine. Thales was our guide for this tour.

Starting the tour they said some instructions and gave a gift. Everyone received a water bottle to fill during the tour and take home. After that we boarded the cable car. With this tour you skip the lines! It is good because there can be very long lines to go up Sugarloaf.
The Ecological tour is special because you can learn about the Atlantic forest and fauna and flora curiosities.
Currently there are 12% of the original Atlantic Forest. The Urca and SugarLoaf hills are some of the conservation areas of this fantastic biome.
In the ecological tour you can see some animals and learn about them. We saw the beautiful bird tiê sangue that is the symbol of this natural park.
We learned more about common Atlantic forest trees like paineira. Be careful because it is covered with thorns.
What are they doing to preserve the Atlantic Forest?
They use electric and solar energy to make everything work in the hills of Urca and Sugarloaf. They use garbage to produce compost for reforestation.
The Ecological Tour is available from Tuesday to Saturday at 10am and takes about 2 hours. After the tour you can explore Sugarloaf on your own. The tour is offered in Portuguese and English and costs 220 reais. If booked in advanced on the site it can be cheaper! Check out information about reservations at the Sugar Loaf’s website!
