There are destinations that are dreamed up by potential travelers… There are destinations that are destinations of dreams but yet still little has been explored. I would say that the region of Istria in Croatia fits this description perfectly. I was there in June 2019 and will tell you a bit about my experience.
How to get to Istria? I arrived at the place by the international airport of Pula. Joel (hubby) and I got a flight from Rio de Janeiro with connection in Frankfurt, Germany. Arriving there, we drove using a rental car.

What to expect from Istria? A calm place with a climate conducive to romance… I will write in this post some tips on this passionate region of Croatia!
1 – The Tuscany of Croatia
Istria is known for its resemblance to the Tuscan region of Italy. No, it’s not a coincidence. After World War I, Istria became part of the Italian territory. It became part of the territory of the former Yugoslavia after World War II. Because of this, the inhabitants of the region speak Italian and Croatian. The buildings of the region preserve a bucolic feature with a unique charm.
Heraki, Istria
We stayed in a rental property via AirBnb in the Heraki neighborhood. From Pula, you can get there in 40 minutes by car.
Want to know about where we stayed? A beautiful house in the middle of so much green landscape!
House of dreams!
2- Sveti Lovreč
Sv. Lovrec
Walking about 40 minutes from Heraki, Joel and I arrived at Sveti Lovreč. Besides being one of the postcards of the region, this is one of the best preserved medieval fortified cities of Istria.
Sv. Lovrec walls
The name of the place comes from the Church of Sv. Lovro (São Lourenço) dating from the 6th century. The defensive walls of the city were constructed in 3 phases: in centuries X, XII and XV.

Strolling the streets of Sveti Lovreč is like traveling through time… The beauty of this beautifully preserved place is enchanting!

3 – Rovinj
Rovinj, Istria
Ah, Rovinj! This charming town lies on the west coast of the Istrian peninsula and is bathed by the Adriatic Sea. From Heraki, take the road and get there in about 30 minutes.
Nowadays, Rovinj is a very popular destination that receives many tourists as well as being a fishing port.
Old Town
Whether on a walk through the streets of the Old Town or taking advantage of the crystal clear waters of the Adriatic Sea, Rovinj is a must-see for visitors traveling to the Istria region.
Adriatic Sea
Apart from the attractions mentioned in this post, there is much to see and to live there, but due to the limited time it was not possible to visit everything. I advise you to take the time to visit the olive plantations and the vineyards of Istria.
