Being a tourist in Rio de Janeiro: taking my bae to the Christ!
It is a long while since last time I wrote in English… There is a very good reason… I am too lazy for it! Also, it is very challenging. I am sorry for my bad style, but this post is meant to transmit the vision of a native Brazilian and to guide you during your time here!
Since January I am dating my lovely gringo, and now I feel like I must write something in English. Also, as Rio de Janeiro is a “must visit” for travelers coming to Brazil, I thought it was going to be a good idea to tell my experience in English.
I have already written about the region of “Porto Maravilha” and what to see in the whereabouts. I guess you will be able to get some information there just clicking on the links from the post. If you can´t, I will be glad to answer any questions you would like to post in the comments session.
Well, my bae and me met at first in Las Vegas, when he was working there and I was in vacation. Then we met again in Arizona, and our days there were amazing. I wrote about this in Portuguese here, here and here (but at some point I intent to write the same posts in English). After we said our goodbye in Arizona (after our first Valentine’s!) he promised he would visit me. And so he did! In March he was in Rio de Janeiro to see me. We spent some time in Petropolis, where I live, but as I said, the must visit is Rio. And course, Cristo Redentor! We went there on a Sunday morning and had a fun time there!
Before my bae came to Brazil, I went to the Christ website to check on tickets fares. The website has three language options: Portuguese, Spanish and English. Brazilian people are very friendly and kind to tourists, therefore it is easy to get information. I myself had to write an email to them and got a very quick reply. Depending on the time of the year, if it is during Brazilian school holidays (from December to January and July) and during weekends, the Corcovado (this is the name of the hill where “Cristo Redentor” is set) can be very busy. It is important to get your ticket with a little advance if you want to skip the lines. But it is not impossible just getting there and buying your ticket. We got there a bit later than the scheduled time in our tickets and it wasn´t difficult to get the next tram. In fact, the ticket you buy is for the tram going up the Corcovado hill. If you like, it is also possible to go up the street a bit more around the hill, park your car (or ask the driver) close to the ” look out” restaurant they have half way. If you go by tram it is possible to get off the tram in this point and see the shop and little museum they have there. From this point it is also possible to purchase tickets from the machines in the entrance of the gift shop.
Travelling to the Christ is easy by car. We used Google maps from Barra da Tijuca and the route was straightforward to follow even for my English speaker Bae! As I always say, Brazilian people are friendly and are eager to help (even if they can´t always speak English!). They will care about your safety and if you are having fun 😉
Getting up the hill you have two options: going through the stairs or using the escalators. We did both, haha…The day was great, but up there the sky was cloudy up the hill…whenever the clouds were not in the way, people cheered! So did we 😉 Up there they have a gift shop and a very simple snack bar. Do not expect to have a nice meal there. But expect fun! It is really a must do.
You know, I have been to the Christ before. But this time it was so great. I have the best bae I could ever imagine and he makes every minute fun. But also, the Christ is awesome. It is definitely a must visit!
